Have some plain Terra Cotta Bowls on hand and want to add some character then why not update them into this fun Aztec Inspired Clay Bowls.
I have so many Terra Cotta Bowls in my home for some reason and I do like them but I just needed to add some design to these bowls.
After the Geometric Bowl Makeover that I did a while back I had a similar Clay Bowl Leftover, so this time around with some Aztec Inspiration the Earthen Bowl got a little makeover.
Update: Since this craft, I have transformed about 5 bowls with varying designs which you should check out in this post, 5 Ways to Upcycle Bowls.
This is how the Terra Cotta Bowl looked before, plain and just Earthen color.

Tutorial for Aztec Inspired Clay Bowl
I first painted the entire bowl in bright orange color.
When it dried it looked a bit similar to the bowl before it was painted but at least it was a bit more vibrant now.
You could of course choose any color of your liking. I chose a bold blue color for my Southwestern-Inspired Clay Bowl which also turned out beautiful.
For the Aztec Design part, I cut out stencils from an old newspaper, nothing too fancy. Just some paper and scissors to make a template.
Fold the four times and in a staircase pattern trim the paper.
When you will open it up it will become an Aztec design.
Cut out two sizes one was large and the other one was a bit smaller.
I then drew a Southwester design and cut it out equally.
I placed the larger stencil in the middle and traced an outline with a pencil and the smaller stencils I traced around the entire rim of the bowl.
After that, I took out my white paint and with a really thin pointed brush started filling in the design.
When that was all filled and painted, I went over the larger design in the middle with Pastel Green Paint and outlined the entire design.
And of course as always at the End like every project that I do I had to outline all the designs with my Gold Sharpie.
The last part is optional but I do like to seal my projects with a clear polyacrylic sealant just so all the hard work is preserved.
And that was it.
All Done.
These bowls are my favorite catch all Bowl. Perfect to set on a bathroom countertop to hold all your perfumes etc or for you front door to keep your keys and all other knick knacks.
