I have to admit that transforming furniture pieces is my favorite kind of DIY. Creating Craft projects are all good and fun but there is something about a furniture piece and giving it a makeover that makes me super excited.
Materials needed For This Project
Gold Liquid Gilding (use it on all my projects)
Palm Leaves (this is what I used on the table)
Paper Plate or Tray (to pour the Mod Podge)
Thin Tip Paintbrush
Since I am part of this amazing group called The Fab Furniture Flippin, where a group of talented DIY Bloggers and I create beautiful furniture transformation using products sponsored to us by a specific company.
For this month the amazing sponsor is Mod Podge and the theme is “Garden Treasure with Mod Podge”. This couldn’t have come at more perfect time for me since I had a project in mind for quite some time now and it was going to fit the theme perfectly.
Personally I’ve been using Mod Podge products for almost three years now and I have always loved them. Besides specializing in Glues and Decoupage finishes they also have a line of paintbrushes, stencils and a number of accessory products.
When I bought this table, the thing which made me fall in love was the GOLD. I always wanted a Gold Accent table in my home decor and when I found this little guy and it was being sold for super cheap, ya know this girl jumped on the opportunity.
Okay so it wasn’t all sunshine and roses, the table had some damage going on. Almost the entire top had spots of rusts as well as the side even some on the bottom.
Any non DIY person would never have given this table a second look but us DIY-ers know that any furniture can be fixed with some TLC.
I am completely loving the Palm/Banana Leaf trend going on these days. You can see some of my projects that I have done using the Palm Leaf as inspiration here, here and here.
And when I found out that this months sponsor is Mod Podge and the theme was Garden Treasure and I had this table which had these rusty spots on top, you know some Decoupage action was about to go down.
I ordered these Palm leaves right away, which were a great deal for the price and the texture was exactly what I wanted.
Basically the idea was to hide the rusty spots in a way which didnt fully cover the “Gold” table since that is why I got the table in the first place.
Hence I went with just half of a leaf around the entire top of the table and a little leaf in the middle. The other halves of the leaves I used on the side of the table. I could have just folded the leaf on table but I ended up cutting it in half because I wanted the Gold Rim to show through.
I used the Matte Finish Mod Podge for the decoupage. I poured it onto a paper plate and with a foam brush applied on to the top of table.
You can clearly see the rusty damage that I had to deal with. Decoupaging is a perfect way to hide any imperfections.
I applied the thin layer on the table then placed the leaf on top and went over it with another thin layer to keep it in place.
I did it on the entire top of the table.
The other half of the leaf I decoupaged onto the sides of the table. Same process, apply a thin layer of Mod Podge, place the leaf and seal it in place with another layer of Mod Podge.
I let the whole table dry completely before I went in with the Mod Podge Gloss Finish to keep the beautiful Gold shine on the entire table.
I’ve never used this finish and all I can say is that it has made it to my top favorite products to use when DIY-ing. Alot of future products will get a dose of this Gloss Finish.
The results were beautiful and I wasn’t expecting it to give such a Glossy Finish.
Lastly I went in with a thin tip paintbrush and my favorite Liquid Gold Gilding to make the “veins” of the leaves more prominent.
And that was basically it.
What do you guys think.
Now for some beauty shots.
