Transform a basic pair of IKEA Skarpo Chairs into these stunning Art like masterpieces using paints and just some creativity.
Since summers are right around the corner it only means one thing being outdoors more often, enjoying the longer days, and some BBQ.
I decided if we are going to be spending so much time outside then why not update my outdoor space a little bit without breaking the bank of course.
I stumbled upon these Ikea Chairs at my neighborhood garage sale. These chairs are called Ikea Skarpo chairs and the design of the chairs completely sold me and I had to purchase them. So I brought these back home, rinsed them, and then it was time to give a little makeover.
I love to incorporate color in all my projects and I have done quite a few colorful Ikea Hacks in the past and you can also check them out such as this Ikea Lack Table that I transformed using a fun stencil or this Ikea basket that I made into a Coffee Table.
IKEA furniture in my opinion is the best blank canvas to modify, paint and upgrade and also the prices are very reasonable as well.

Tutorial for DIY Painted Outdoor Ikea Chairs
Okay so before we jump into the makeover I have to show you guys the Before. These Ikea chairs come in two colors black and white.
I only had the option of the black chair at the garage sale which I was completely fine with as I was going to completely paint over it.
The chairs were in great condition with a few marks here and there but nothing too bad that couldn’t be covered with some paint.
Step 1
Keeping the curvy shape of the chair in mind I decided to create an almost wave-type pattern for the chair. One of the chairs I was going to paint in shades of green and the other in shades of purple and pink.
Starting off from the back of the chair I painted a wave pattern.
This was such a joy to paint as any mistake just added to the design and seemed intentional.
I used DecoArt’s Outdoor Living Paint which is perfect to be used for patio and outdoor furniture as it is pretty durable.
Then I just went along and created more wave like pattern using different colored blue and green paint.
If painting is something that scares you or intimidates you then there are so many other ways to update a chair as well.
You could always update an IKEA chair by
- Spray Painting
- Decoupaging your favorite fabric onto the chair.
- Updating it with throw pillows
- Painting while using a stencil
While the green version of my chair was drying I decided to start painting the other one in shades of pink and purple copying the same exact design and pattern.
These outdoor living paints are also incredible as you do not need to prime or sand the furniture before using as it adheres pretty great.
The back of the chair also got a dose of color and I completely covered it in a deep pink color.
The last step is optional but it can make your work long lasting and it is to top off the chairs with a good Polycrylic Sealant.
I used it in a clear matte finish.
And there you have it a pair of Ikea Outdoor Chairs gets an easy and pretty facelift
What do you guys think?
Don’t these chairs look like pieces of Art?
Which version of the chair is your favorite? The pink one or the green one?
It’s so hard for me to choose either or so I have to go with both the colors and versions.
